Do all students prefer to use e-books? You would think so, but according to the research in Kaplan's book (see resource page), some students prefer the old-fashioned book to the new age e-readers while others prefer the exact opposite. While this trend may change in the future, studies show that the desire to use e-books increases by grade level. Even though our young people seem often submersed in technology on a regular basis, this trend does not always seem to apply to reading and books.
Can all students use the same kind of e-reader? When librarians are considering purchasing e-readers and e-books, student's abilities and levels should always be considered. One of the great things about e-books is the ability to diversify the content based on student interest and ability. Not taking advantage of this opportunity can not be afforded by school librarians.
E-readers and e-books should be examined thoroughly and compared to find the best fit for a school's population.
